I don't really see anime and cartoon slapstick similar. It's humor for kids, but anime is way diferent to cartoons. Tom and Jerry and Hanna-Barbera cartoons have a lot of slapstick in it. I have not seen much slapstick in animes. I am just saying that anime and cartoon slapstick is not similar. No offense. Don't get mad at me for saying this.

I'm gonna say indifferent. Because some scenes can have a few similar things, though not many have the sound effects like cartoons have. You have people hitting someone with a shoe, various items, and even their own fists. Samething you can see in cartoons. But, anime can have blood. While cartoons never had that. Slap stick is a commonly used comical act, many series use it. Some the whole series is based around it, other use it to give you a break from the plot and have a laugh.

Characters getting hurt in a funny way, then being fine in the next scene.

Difference:
Anime having more blood in theirs
Cartoons having the sound effects

Cartoons don't have blood because of the children. They would not appreciate to see blood in cartoons. Some censored cartoons have blood in it. Anime slapstick is quite worse, with blood, gore, and brutal scenes. I think that they are not the same

riley: That wouldn't be slap stick then. Gore and really graphic scenes aren't slap stick, that's just violence. A character in a pool of blood after being hit by a wrench, and his brother putting his soul back into him. That is anime slap stick. Not like old fashion slap stick, like the old days cartoons and shows like the Three Stooges. Though there are a lot of anime that has slap stick without blood, just like cartoon slap stick.

Anime slaps are hilarious, cartoons and anime are not similar.
Besides both being animated.

Slapstick is a type of broad physical comedy involving exaggerated, boisterous actions (e.g. a pie in the face), farce, violence and activities which may exceed the boundaries of common sense.

I wasn't aware that slapstick suddenly changed when you changed the type of show on which it occurs. If we were talking about slapstick in Die Hard and comparing it to Looney Toons, it would still be the same kind of slapstick. Sure, some types of shows and movies get more exaggerated than others, some include more gritty and real violence, and some exceed the bounds of common sense far more so than others, but isn't it all essentially the same joke, just told in different ways with different visual and auditory cues? I mean, don't get me wrong, the blood and sound effects are different, I just don't see how they make such tremendous differences between anime and cartoons in how they accomplish slapstick. They're both just meant to accentuate the feeling of surprise and hilarity, not cause it. The cause is still the violence or the exaggeration.

Again, I'm not convinced that those two aspects make it so dissimilar. The concept is still the same, and the humor functions in exactly the same way. It's just about enhancing one aspect or another, not changing it dramatically. Similarity isn't about being the same in every way, after all.

Anime slapstick and cartoon slapstick have their differences, yes, that I can agree with. However, I think the differences slightly outweigh the similarities, but only slightly. I agree with what Whiteflame is saying in general, though I have to point out that no-one actually said anything about them being different entities, just that they have differences. Both are still slapstick, just slightly differently done slapstick.

*shrug* I can see the point, just seems to me like they're still very similar. Cartoons and anime tend to be incredibly outrageous because they're capable of doing things live action isn't. That seems to be a strong uniting theme between them, so I see it as more similar than not.

^ Don't worry, I get what you mean, they are similar in a respect, I just think that they are a little more different than they are similar. The anime slapstick has a bit of a different style than the cartoon slapstick, plus, there's generally more graphic stuff in anime, which follows with the better animation style, plus they tend to try and introduce the humor slightly different. I find that awkward 'have to laugh' situation often in anime, where I burst into laughter during some cartoons. XD

Pumpkin, You might be right, but I have seen some slapstick scenes which have blood and some gore in them. Cartoon slapstick is designed for humour, but anime slapstick has some humour in it and some scenes which are not cool. I honestly prefer Cartoon Slapstick then Anime slapstick because Cartoon slapstick is more funnier and it does not have any blood. Anime slapstick does have some blood in it.
